Australia Women showcased their class once again in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, defeating Pakistan Women by 107 runs in the 9th match at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Pakistan got early breakthroughs, but Beth Mooney’s magnificent century guided the Aussies to a competitive 221 for 9 in their 50 overs. Mooney’s sublime knock of 109 off 114 balls, laced with 11 boundaries, was the backbone of the innings.
Australia struggled in the early overs as openers Alyssa Healy (20) and Phoebe Litchfield (10) fell cheaply, followed by quick dismissals of Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland. However, Mooney stood tall amid the collapse, building a crucial partnership with Alana King, who contributed a quickfire 51 from 49 deliveries, including 3 fours and 3 sixes. The duo rescued Australia from 85 for 6 to post a fighting total. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 37 runs, while Rameen Shamim (2/29) and Sana Fatima (2/49) also bowled impressively.
Chasing 222 for victory, Pakistan’s batting lineup failed to find any rhythm against a disciplined Australian bowling attack. Only Sidra Ameen offered some resistance with a composed 35 off 52 deliveries, but wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. None of the other batters could build partnerships, as the Australian bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.
Kim Garth was the star with the ball, producing an exceptional spell of 3 for 14 in 6 overs, including the prized wickets of Sidra Nawaz and Eyman Fatima. Megan Schutt and Sutherland complemented her efforts with two wickets each, while King, Ashleigh Gardner, and Georgia Wareham picked up one apiece. Pakistan were eventually bundled out for just 114 in 36.3 overs, falling well short of the target.
Mooney’s masterclass innings earned her the Player of the Match award, as her knock proved decisive in setting up Australia’s emphatic win.
