Fans react as clinical Pakistan crush West Indies in second Test to level series 1-1

Pakistan produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat West Indies by eight wickets in the second Test at the Queen’s Park Oval, securing a series-levelling victory and ending the two-match contest at 1-1. Chasing a modest target of 75 on the fourth day, the visitors wrapped up the chase with ease to record their first away Test victory since 2023, bouncing back strongly after suffering a 90-run defeat in the series opener at Tarouba.

The chase was completed shortly after lunch when captain Babar Azam confidently launched left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican for back-to-back sixes, sealing the result in style. The win was built on disciplined bowling, resilient batting and Pakistan’s ability to seize control whenever opportunities arose.

Although the target appeared straightforward, Pakistan endured a brief wobble after losing both openers before lunch on the fourth day. Jayden Seales provided West Indies with an early breakthrough by dismissing Imam-ul-Haq for nine after finding the outside edge, while Shamar Joseph later removed young opener Azan Awais for 18. However, the hosts could not build further pressure as Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam combined to guide Pakistan safely home.

Fresh from his magnificent unbeaten 160 in the first innings, Shafique once again displayed composure, remaining unbeaten on 24 from 51 deliveries. Babar matched his captain’s responsibility with an equally unbeaten 24, striking two fours and two towering sixes, including the winning blows that completed an emphatic chase. Pakistan resumed the day requiring only 18 more runs after reaching 57/2 at lunch, leaving little doubt about the outcome.

Earlier in the morning, Pakistan’s bowling attack ensured the hosts had no route back into the contest. West Indies resumed their second innings at 103/6 but managed to add only 14 more runs before being bowled out for 117. Brandon King, who had sustained a lower-back injury on the previous day, did not return to bat, further weakening the home side’s resistance.

Left-arm spinner Usman carried forward the momentum from the final ball of Day 3, when he had dismissed West Indies captain Roston Chase. He struck again soon after play resumed by cleaning up Kemar Roach without adding to the score. Justin Greaves briefly resisted with three runs before Mohammad Ali removed him, while Joseph’s entertaining cameo of nine also came to an end as Pakistan wrapped up the innings efficiently.

Usman and fellow spinner Sajid Khan shared the honours with four wickets each in the second innings, consistently exploiting the surface and preventing West Indies from building meaningful partnerships. Ali chipped in with a wicket to complete a polished bowling display.

The drawn series reflected two contrasting performances from both sides. West Indies had looked the superior outfit in Tarouba, registering a convincing 90-run victory to take an early lead. Pakistan, however, responded with remarkable authority in Trinidad. Shafique’s match-defining unbeaten century in the first innings laid the foundation, while the spin duo of Usman and Sajid dominated the final two days to leave the hosts with no answers.
