India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England has generated significant debate among supporters and cricket experts alike. With the team beginning its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the selectors opted for a strong and experienced group, bringing back several senior players for the important overseas assignment.

While the return of established stars grabbed headlines, one omission became the center of attention soon after the squad was announced. One of the biggest talking points from India’s squad announcement was the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young opener had enjoyed a productive ODI series against Afghanistan and finished it on a high with an unbeaten century in the third and final match. Jaiswal has made a strong start to his ODI career, scoring two hundreds in just six appearances and showcasing his ability to adapt to the demands of the 50-over format.

Jaiswal’s recent performances had led many to believe that he could retain his place for the England tour. However, India’s selectors opted for a full-strength squad as preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup continue. The return of several senior players increased competition for spots, making selection decisions even more difficult.

The squad announcement also marked the return of several key players. Virat Kohli is back in the ODI setup subject to a fitness clearance, having missed the Afghanistan series because of a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah returns to India’s ODI squad for the first time since the 2023 World Cup final after workload management kept him out of recent assignments.

Axar Patel has also earned a recall after missing India’s last three ODI series. His inclusion comes at the expense of Harsh Dubey, while Prince Yadav, who made his ODI debut against Afghanistan, misses out following Bumrah’s return. Another notable absentee is Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder was initially selected for the Afghanistan ODIs but suffered a leg strain during training and remains unavailable.

India’s ODI series against England will begin in Birmingham on July 14 before moving to Cardiff on July 16 and concluding at Lord’s on July 19. While the squad boasts considerable experience, the omission of Jaiswal remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of the tour, with fans continuing to debate whether the young opener deserved another opportunity in the format.
