'Focus is on the Test series' - Pat Cummins concedes ahead of South Africa tour

Australia's captain Pat Cummins has made clear that the upcoming Test series in South Africa is the priority for his team, with the preceding white-ball matches serving as preparation for the longer format. Australia's next assignment comprises three ODIs in Zimbabwe and three in South Africa in late September, followed by Tests in Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town in October.

Cummins outlined his thinking on the tour structure and his own involvement in the white-ball leg. The captain explained his selective approach to the ODI matches and how they fit into the broader tour strategy.

"I think I'll be part of at least some of it. I'm not sure I should say this, but think the focus is on the Test series. So a lot of the white-ball [series], and how we play that, would be with an eye to the red ball," Cummins said as quoted by Cricinfo.

"So I'd imagine it'd be one, two, probably a maximum of three games out of those six. We'll probably all have, I imagine, a week or two off bowling, still do your gym work, and then we'll start building up for that series. I'll probably have an extra week here if I don't play the Zimbabwe [matches]," he added.

Cummins acknowledged the strength of South Africa as opponents and reflected on recent encounters between the two sides. Australia won a 3-match Test series against South Africa 2-0 in December 2022 to January 2023, a result that exceeded expectations at the time. However, South Africa gained revenge in their most recent meeting, with the hosts outplaying Australia at Lord's last year.

The South Africa Tests will present a different challenge for Australia, with the matches to be played in unfamiliar conditions. Australia has not toured South Africa for a long-form series in eight years, making the assignment particularly significant. Cummins noted the variety of pitches and conditions across the three venues, explaining how each location presents its own demands.

"They're a really strong side. We had a big series against them here in Australia a couple of years back and we probably exceeded expectations, played really well, and then they got us back at Lord's last year and outplayed us there. So it's going to be big, obviously, in their home conditions [and] places we haven't played Test cricket in for a while. So conditions are always a little bit unknown. Even the difference between Durban to, say, Cape Town can be quite different styles of pitches," Cummins said.

"It's going to be great. That's why I love playing Test cricket. It's all different conditions, different opponents, different parts of the world. Can't wait," he added.
