Former India cricketer cites a telling statistic to silence critics over Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup selection

As debates surrounding India’s squad composition for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup intensify, veteran opener Rohit Sharma remains at the center of discussions regarding age, form, and longevity. However, former Indian cricketer has mounted a strong defense for the veteran batter, offering a compelling statistical perspective that underscores why Rohit remains indispensable to the national setup in overseas conditions.

Addressing concerns about Rohit’s potential role in the upcoming World Cup, scheduled to take place predominantly in South Africa, Former opener Sadagoppan Ramesh pointed to a key metric that highlights the batter’s effectiveness in testing conditions. Under Gautam Gambhir‘s tenure as head coach, the Indian team has managed 15 individual ODI centuries. Yet, across demanding series in Australia and England, only two hundreds were registered by Indian batters, both off the bat of Rohit.

In the final ODI against Australia in Sydney, Rohit anchored the innings with an unbeaten 121 off 125 deliveries. He followed that performance with a brilliant 138 off 110 balls during the series decider against England at Lord’s. According to Ramesh, this ability to deliver in foreign environments makes Rohit an essential inclusion for the marquee tournament in South Africa.

“The next World Cup is in South Africa, which is one of the SENA countries. There have been 15 ODI centuries by Indian players with Gautam Gambhir as head coach. However, only two have come in SENA countries. And Rohit Sharma is the one who scored both those centuries. So just by this logic, Rohit should be the first name written on the team sheet for the World Cup. There should be no hesitation on this,” Ramesh stated on his Instagram handle.

Navigating pitch conditions in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA) has historically posed a significant challenge for subcontinental batters. With the 2027 tournament set to take place on pace-friendly South African tracks, technical adaptability and experience will be critical factors for top-order stability.

Ramesh emphasized that evaluating Rohit’s spot should be driven purely by performance metrics in high-pressure conditions rather than sentimentality or age-related concerns.

“The selectors still seem hesitant to pick Rohit Sharma for the 2027 World Cup. Yet, this is a simple logic through which Rohit should be an automatic choice for the tournament. And it has nothing to do with him being an all-time great player or other emotions. We all know that the SENA countries are the biggest challenge for Indian players,” Ramesh added.

Historically, Rohit has built an impressive record in white-ball cricket across England and Australia, maintaining ODI averages of 64.12 and 56.66 respectively in those nations. While his track record in South Africa reflects a tougher challenge, averaging under 20 across 13 ODI innings, his recent adaptability in challenging conditions reinforces his importance to India’s top order as the team plans its roadmap for 2027.
