Former Pakistan players face two-year ban threat over Asian Legends League participation

The Pakistan Cricket Board issued a statement on August 5, 2026, warning that former Pakistan cricketers who participated in the Asian Legends League 2026 without the required approvals could face a two-year ban on No Objection Certificate issuance and a two-year period of ineligibility for all PCB and PSL assignments.

The PCB said it had taken serious notice of the participation of former Pakistan cricketers in the Asian Legends League 2026. The board noted that the ICC classifies the Asian Legends League as an unsanctioned and disapproved cricket event under its Regulations on Sanctioning of Events and Player Release. The Zambia Cricket Union had also issued a statement in late July 2026 clarifying that the league was not sanctioned, approved or endorsed by ZCU.

The tournament began July 30, 2026, in Lusaka, Zambia, and features six teams, Pakistan Panthers, Indian Royals, Sri Lankan Lions, Bangladesh Tigers, Afghanistan Pathans, and Asian Stars. More than a dozen former Pakistan cricketers signed up for the Pakistan Panthers, and the side had played two matches in the tournament by the time the PCB issued its statement.

The PCB outlined the specific disciplinary measures that would apply to any individual found to have participated in the league without obtaining the requisite approvals.

"In light of the above, the following disciplinary measures will be taken on individuals found to have participated in the said unsanctioned event without obtaining the requisite approvals from the PCB.' The penalties listed were: 'A ban of two years from the issuance of any PCB No Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in approved overseas cricket leagues or events. [And] Ineligibility for any cricketing, coaching, consultancy, mentoring and/or other assignments with the PCB and the PSL for a period of two years," the PCB statement read as quoted by Cricinfo.

The PCB made clear it considers the violation to have already occurred, even though the tournament is still ongoing. Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir, and Umar Akmal travelled to Lusaka but decided against playing after learning that the requisite ICC approvals had not been secured. It is not confirmed which specific players from the Pakistan Panthers squad featured in the two matches completed so far.

The named Pakistan Panthers squad for the Asian Legends League 2026 are, Sharjeel Khan, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Imran Nazir, Saeed Ajmal, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Shah, Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Irfan, Zulfiqar Babar, Rahat Ali, Hasan Raza, Yasir Bhatt, and Rana Naeem Anwar.

The PCB reiterated that all current and former cricketers seeking to participate in overseas cricket events requiring PCB clearance must obtain the necessary approvals and NOCs prior to participation.
