Cricket fans across the world are eagerly waiting for the high-voltage 5-match Test series between England and India, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. This much-anticipated red-ball clash marks India’s first full-fledged Test series under new skipper Shubman Gill. The young captain will have the challenging task of leading his side against Ben Stokes‘ rejuvenated England, known for their fearless and aggressive style of play under the ‘Bazball’ era. With both teams stacked with talent and pride on the line, the series promises intense battles and tactical drama.
Former England great Geoffrey Boycott has shared a critical assessment of India’s chances, suggesting that the absence of seasoned stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could seriously hurt the visiting team. Writing in his column for The Daily Telegraph, Boycott expressed doubts about India’s ability to topple England in their home conditions.
“The retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hurts the chances of India beating England. Kohli is the biggest loss as he has been their best batsman and talisman in all three formats,” Boycott wrote.
He further elaborated on the mental and physical toll that the packed Indian schedule can have on top players: “With so much international cricket played by India, and so little rest, it takes its toll and the mind becomes fatigued. It does not matter how much talent or experience you have, if you are not mentally fresh and up for the challenge, then it becomes draining.”

As the Indian team begins a new chapter under Gill’s leadership, all eyes will be on how the young captain adapts to the demands of Test cricket in England. Known for his elegant stroke play and composed temperament, Gill now faces the real test of managing strategy, team dynamics, and pressure against a top-tier side in their own backyard.
While India boasts emerging talents and a potent bowling attack, the leadership void left by veterans like Kohli and Rohit will be closely watched. Gill’s performance—both as a batter and a leader—will be crucial in deciding whether India can defy the odds and script a historic series win on English soil.
