South African cricketing legend Hashim Amla has revealed his three all-time favourite batters, offering fans a rare glimpse into the players who shaped his perspective on the game. Surprisingly, the iconic Sachin Tendulkar was left out, as Amla opted for names other than the highest run scorer of the game. The 42-year-old is currently part of the South Africa Champions in WCL 2025.
In conversation with Shefali Bagga for Star Sports, Amla was asked to pick his three best batters if he were to choose his best world XI. Amla called it a really tough decision, given the number of greats he admired over the years. His childhood favourites included Brian Lara, Steve Waugh, and fellow South African Jacques Kallis. He also mentioned Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and the legendary Sir Vivian Richards as standout names. What caught many by surprise was the absence of Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar from Amla’s list.
“A really tough one. There are so many over the years. Growing up, my three favorite players were [Brian] Lara, Steve Waugh, and Jacques Kallis, also being from South Africa. But also maybe three other names; In that Virat [Kohli], you know the recent times, AB de Villiers, and I’d say one more old one – Sir Vivian Richards,” Amla stated.

Amla has been one of the greatest South African batters with staggering numbers to his name. Known for his elegant strokeplay, composure under pressure, and unmatched consistency, he has amassed over 18,000 runs across formats. The right-hander also has 55 centuries to his name, including four double centuries in Test cricket. Currently, Amla is featuring in the WCL, playing for the de Villiers-led South Africa Champions. In a rain-affected match against West Indies Champions, Amla scored 15 runs off 18 deliveries. He will next be in action against India Champions on July 22 in Northampton, where fans eagerly await another glimpse of his timeless class.
