'He is a generational talent' - Former India opener blasts selectors over Rishabh Pant's ODI snub

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has questioned the team management for not utilising Rishabh Pant effectively. Pant last played an ODI in August 2024. He was recently picked in India's 15-member squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand.
Chopra could not digest the fact that Pant was picked in the ODI setup but hardly ever trusted to be a part of the XI. He felt the think tank missed out on playing the left-handed batter during certain matches where he could have been tested.
"Rishabh Pant hasn't played ODIs since 2024, but he remains part of the team. He is a generational talent. His numbers aren't that good in ODIs and T20Is as of now, that is also a reality. However, not playing him a single match since 2024, but keeping him with the team says that I am not the only one who is saying that he is a good player. The team is also saying the same thing. However, when it's his turn to play, you don't play him," shared Chopra in a video on his YouTube channel.
Chopra opined Pant could have been played in all three matches against South Africa to assess the latter's form. The renowned commentator believed that the 28-year-old may not get an opportunity in the near future.
"Then, when the next chance comes, it's always a discussion issue as to why Rishabh Pant should be played. When there was a chance to play, you could have played him. You could have played him in all three matches, and if he had done well, he would have remained with the team, or else you could have said that he is not in your scheme of things as he didn't do well. You didn't give him a chance at all, and a chance won't come now," he added.

Pant has played 31 ODIs for India as of now. He has registered 871 runs at an average and strike rate of 33.50 and 106.21, respectively. The wicketkeeper-batter has featured in 49 Tests and 76 T20Is as well. Of late, Pant has been the most active in the Test format.
