Delhi Capitals (DC) kept their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoff hopes alive with a thrilling three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 55 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on May 11. In a must-win clash for Axar Patel’s men, the visitors chased down a daunting 211-run target in dramatic fashion to stay in contention for a top-four finish.

After being invited to bat first, Punjab Kings posted an imposing total of 210/5 in their 20 overs. Young opener Priyansh Arya continued his impressive run with a fluent 56, while skipper Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 59 to anchor the innings brilliantly. Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly also chipped in with a valuable 38-run knock, helping PBKS cross the 200-run mark. However, Delhi Capitals responded with remarkable determination despite suffering an early collapse in the chase.

The chase got off to a disastrous start for DC as both KL Rahul and Abishek Porel departed for single-digit scores. Sahil Parakh and Tristan Stubbs also failed to convert their starts, leaving the Capitals struggling at 74/4 and staring at another damaging defeat.Just when the pressure was mounting, captain Axar stepped up with a counter-attacking innings. The left-hander smashed a fighting 56 and rebuilt the innings with calmness and aggression. His knock shifted the momentum back towards Delhi and gave the side much-needed belief in the steep chase.

Veteran batter David Miller then took charge in the latter stages. The South African star played a composed yet powerful innings of 51 runs and kept the scoreboard ticking during the crucial overs. Although Miller fell at a tense stage of the match, DC still needed quick runs in the final phase.

Youngsters Ashutosh Sharma and Madhav Tiwari held their nerves brilliantly under pressure. Ashutosh contributed a handy 24, while Tiwari remained unbeaten on 18 to steer the Capitals home by three wickets in a last-over thriller. The victory not only ended DC’s inconsistent run but also revived their fading playoff ambitions.

Despite the important win, Delhi Capitals still face an uphill task in the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs. The Axar Patel-led side currently sits seventh in the points table with 10 points from 12 matches, having won five games and lost seven.

To remain in contention, DC must win both of their remaining league-stage matches. Victories in those games would take them to 14 points, which could still be enough to secure a playoff berth depending on other results.

However, their qualification hopes do not depend solely on their own performances. Delhi will also need favourable outcomes from teams around them in the standings. A few losses for direct competitors could open the door for DC to sneak into the top four.

While the chances remain slim, the thrilling win over Punjab Kings has certainly given the Capitals renewed hope heading into the final stretch of the tournament.
