Here’s how KKR can qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after beating MI at Eden Gardens

The IPL 2026 campaign for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) found fresh life on Wednesday after a crucial victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens. At one stage, KKR looked completely out of the playoff race following five defeats in their opening six matches. However, a remarkable turnaround over the past few weeks has now pushed them back into contention heading into the final round of league fixtures. The win over Mumbai not only lifted the mood inside the KKR camp but also ensured that the race for the fourth playoff spot remains alive until the very end of the group stage.
In a rain-affected contest played on a difficult Eden Gardens surface, KKR produced another disciplined all-round performance to defeat MI and register their sixth win of the season. After winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane’s side delivered an excellent bowling effort to restrict MI to 147/8 in 20 overs.
Cameron Green, Saurabh Dubey and Kartik Tyagi picked up two wickets each, while Sunil Narine once again controlled the middle overs brilliantly with his economical spell. During the chase, KKR lost a couple of early wickets, but Manish Pandey stepped up with a composed 45 off 33 balls, and Rovman Powell also played a crucial hand with a steady 40 as the pair stitched together a match-winning partnership. KKR comfortably completed the chase in 18.5 overs, with Rinku Singh finishing the game.
KKR looked almost eliminated midway through the tournament after suffering five defeats in their first six games. Their batting struggled for consistency, while close defeats further pushed them down the standings. However, they have completely revived their campaign over the last few matches. Now they have won seven of their last eight games, turning their season around at the perfect time.
The return of form for key players like Narine, Green and Finn Allen has significantly strengthened the side. Their bowling attack has also adapted brilliantly to the slower Eden Gardens conditions, repeatedly restricting opposition batting lineups under pressure.
The latest victory lifted KKR from eighth position to sixth in the points table with 13 points from 13 matches. While their qualification hopes are still hanging by a thread, Kolkata have at least given themselves a realistic chance heading into the final game of the season.

Currently sitting on 13 points from 13 matches, KKR can reach a maximum of 15 points if they defeat Delhi Capitals (DC) in their final league game. However, qualification will depend heavily on results involving Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The biggest factor for KKR is the Rajasthan Royals clash against the Mumbai Indians. If Rajasthan win that match, they will officially qualify for the playoffs, and KKR will be eliminated regardless of their own result against DC.
For KKR to stay alive, Rajasthan Royals must lose their final league fixture. That would keep RR on 14 points and open the door for Kolkata. In addition, KKR must defeat Delhi Capitals in their final match to move to 15 points. A loss or washout would immediately knock them out of the competition.
Net Run Rate could also become decisive if multiple teams finish on the same points tally. KKR currently have an outside chance of qualifying through NRR if several results go in their favour. Kolkata will also closely monitor Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings games. Both teams remain mathematically alive in the race, meaning any unexpected result could further complicate the playoff equation.
