Here’s why Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are not playing today’s PBKS vs MI clash in IPL 2026

In a major development ahead of the high-stakes IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, both Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya were ruled out of the contest, leaving fans surprised moments before the toss. With Mumbai already eliminated from the playoff race and Punjab fighting to keep their top-four hopes alive, the absence of two senior MI stars became one of the biggest talking points of the evening.
Adding further intrigue, Jasprit Bumrah walked out for the toss as Mumbai Indians captain, confirming the late changes and offering clarity on Suryakumar’s absence while also hinting at ongoing fitness concerns surrounding Hardik Pandya.
Mumbai Indians skipper Bumrah revealed at the toss that star batter Suryakumar was unavailable for selection because of personal reasons. However, the franchise did not disclose any further details regarding the nature of his absence.
The news came as a surprise to fans, especially considering Suryakumar has been one of Mumbai’s most influential batters in recent seasons. His absence leaves a significant gap in the middle order, particularly in a pressure game where MI would have hoped to end their campaign strongly and disrupt Punjab’s playoff ambitions.
With Suryakumar unavailable, Mumbai reshuffled their batting unit and handed additional responsibility to Tilak Varma, Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford in the middle overs.
While Bumrah did not directly specify the reason behind Hardik’s absence, reports suggest the all-rounder is still recovering from persistent back spasms that first troubled him during Mumbai’s clash against Chennai Super Kings on May 2 in Chennai. Hardik has already missed Mumbai’s previous two matches in Mumbai and Raipur, and despite recently returning to training sessions at the Reliance Corporate Park, the franchise medical staff reportedly have not granted him complete clearance.
Mumbai’s think tank appears unwilling to risk their regular captain given the nature of the injury, especially with concerns around workload management and long-term fitness. As a result, Bumrah took charge of the side for the all-important encounter in Dharamsala. The veteran pacer’s appointment as captain also marked a memorable moment in his long association with the franchise. Thirteen years after making his debut for Mumbai Indians, Bumrah led the five-time champions in what was his 156th appearance for the team.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer also announced multiple changes to his side after a poor run of results pushed the team from first place down to fourth in the standings. Looking to strengthen both the bowling attack and all-round depth, Punjab brought in Xavier Bartlett, Harpreet Brar and Azmatullah Omarzai for the crucial fixture.
“Harpreet Brar, Xavier Bartlett and Azmatullah Omarzai come in,” Iyer confirmed at the toss.
Punjab will be desperate to bounce back after consecutive setbacks, while Mumbai, despite being out of playoff contention, will aim to play the role of spoilers.
