Here’s why Suryakumar Yadav withdrew run-out appeal against UAE’s Junaid Siddique in Asia Cup 2025 clash

Team India began their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a commanding performance against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side dismantled the hosts for just 57 runs before racing to the target in just 4.3 overs, registering a nine-wicket victory. While India’s pace attack and sharp fielding stole the show, it was a moment of sportsmanship from skipper Suryakumar that became the talking point of the contest.

The drama unfolded in the 13th over of UAE’s innings, bowled by Shivam Dube. On the third delivery, Junaid Siddique backed away attempting a pull shot but missed. As he gestured toward Dube, pointing out that the bowler’s towel had slipped during his run-up, wicketkeeper Sanju Samson was quick to spot an opportunity. In a moment of awareness, Samson threw down the stumps with Siddique stranded outside his crease.

The third umpire confirmed Siddique was indeed short of his ground, and the big screen flashed “OUT.” However, much to everyone’s surprise, Suryakumar intervened and asked the umpires to withdraw the appeal.

The Indian captain’s decision stemmed from the fact that Siddique had been distracted by the falling towel and was not focused on regaining his crease. Under Law 20.4.2.7 of the MCC rule book, an umpire can call a delivery ‘dead ball’ if the striker is distracted by movement or noise before receiving the ball. While the umpires did not invoke the law in this case, Suryakumar’s call to withdraw the appeal ensured the situation did not escalate.

The gesture drew loud applause from the Dubai crowd and praise from the commentary panel, who lauded the Indian skipper for prioritizing the spirit of the game over a dismissal. Though, Siddique was dismissed on the very next ball, further highlighting the fairness of the decision.

UAE’s batting never really took off after the incident. With wickets tumbling in clusters, they folded for just 57 in 13.1 overs. India’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance, with Dube, and Kuldeep Yadav sharing the spoils.

Chasing a modest target of 58, India’s openers made light work of the UAE attack. Abhishek Sharma smashed 30 runs off 16 balls, setting the tone for a blistering chase. Vice-captain Shubman Gill played the anchor role, remaining unbeaten on 20, while Suryakumar chipped in with a few quick runs before Abhishek’s dismissal. India sealed the game inside five overs, marking one of their fastest successful chases in Asia Cup history.
