Amidst playoffs qualification drama in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher heaped massive praise on legendary skipper MS Dhoni while reflecting on the latter’s unparalleled popularity and contribution to world cricket. Dhoni remains one of the greatest captains the league has ever seen, with five titles for the Chennai Super Kings.
Boucher’s remarks came after CSK's disappointing five-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, May 18. The loss further dented the playoff hopes for the Chennai-based franchise in what has been a challenging season for the five-time champions in the nineteenth edition of the tournament.
Speaking after the match, Boucher opened up on the unmatched aura surrounding the former India captain and how witnessing the atmosphere at Chepauk leaves a lasting impression on cricket fans across the globe.
“I’ve been at Chepauk a few times, and I’ve never seen fans go as crazy for anyone as they do for MS Dhoni. It’s something I speak about even in South Africa. Whenever people say they want to experience the IPL, I always tell them they have to go to Chepauk to watch Dhoni, because that’s when you truly understand how massive he is in this country. He has been an absolute legend of the game, not just in India but across the world. What he has done for cricket is astronomical,” Boucher said via JioStar.

The former Proteas cricketer also admitted that Dhoni’s eventual departure from the game would leave a massive void in cricket. Boucher further expressed hope that the veteran remains associated with the sport in some role after retirement, especially with CSK.
“Whenever he eventually decides to move on, it will be a huge loss for the game. Hopefully, he continues to remain involved in cricket in some capacity, whether as a director of cricket for CSK or in another role. He has an incredible cricket brain and an outstanding character. He will forever be remembered among the greats of the game. And from the rest of the cricketing world, thank you for everything you’ve done for the sport. You’ve been an absolute superstar,” he concluded.

The Super Kings, in Dhoni’s absence, are a struggling unit this season. The five-time champions have struggled to maintain consistency, winning just six of their 13 matches.
