Hyderabad to get India's biggest cricket stadium, surpassing Narendra Modi Stadium

Hyderabad is set to become home to India's largest cricket stadium, with a proposed venue in Future City planned to seat more than 1.32 lakh spectators. That capacity would push past the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which holds 1,32,000 spectators and is currently recognised as the world's largest cricket ground.

The foundation stone for the new stadium is likely to be laid in December 2026, marking the formal start of a project that has drawn considerable attention from cricket administrators and the state government. Under the proposed arrangement, the Telangana government will make land available for the development, while the BCCI is set to take responsibility for funding construction and overseeing the long-term maintenance of the facility.

The stadium will form part of a broader Sports City development within Future City, a zone that is itself central to Telangana's Net-Zero City vision. That alignment places the venue well beyond the role of a conventional cricket ground, positioning it as a key element of a large-scale urban planning and environmental sustainability initiative.

The design of the proposed stadium is expected to draw inspiration from Lord's Cricket Ground in England as well as prominent Australian stadiums. The ambition behind those reference points suggests a facility that combines heritage architectural character with contemporary infrastructure standards, setting a high benchmark for the finished venue.

No specific architectural firm or design consultant has been confirmed at this stage. The project's scale and its integration into a planned city environment indicate that detailed design work is still in progress. Once finalised, the venue is intended to meet the requirements of international cricket at the highest level, accommodating crowds in excess of 1.32 lakh within a modern, purpose-built setting. The combination of a record-breaking capacity and an architecturally ambitious brief signals that planners intend the Hyderabad ground to stand alongside the most celebrated cricket venues in the world.

Connectivity has been a central consideration in selecting the Future City site. The stadium will have direct access to both the Outer Ring Road and the Regional Ring Road, allowing supporters to reach the ground from a wide range of locations across Hyderabad and its surrounding districts.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport falls within the transport network serving the stadium site, an important factor for visiting international teams and overseas spectators travelling to Hyderabad for marquee fixtures. The planned Metro Rail expansion is also expected to extend to the area, giving large match-day crowds a reliable and high-capacity public transport option.
