ICC reveals new host for inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed India as the new host for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027. The six-team T20I tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka, but the event has now been relocated following concerns over the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket.

The tournament will be played in February 2027 and will feature six of the leading teams in women’s cricket, adding another major event to India’s growing international cricket calendar.

The Women’s Champions Trophy will take place from February 14 to 28, 2027, with six teams competing in the T20I format. India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka qualified for the tournament based on the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings.

All six teams will play each other once in the league stage, with the top two teams progressing to the final on February 28. The tournament will be hosted across two venues, the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lanka was originally chosen to host the inaugural edition, but the ICC Board later approved the relocation to India. The decision came after concerns over government involvement in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket remains under a government-appointed committee as it works on reforms to its governance structure. The ICC considers such political or government interference to be against its regulations for the administration of cricket.

India emerged as the successful bidder after the ICC also considered proposals from Bangladesh and South Africa. ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy would mark an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket, with the competition bringing the world’s best teams together and creating another incentive for sides to climb the rankings. The tournament has also undergone a change in its scheduling, having initially been planned for June before being moved to February 2027.
