Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have released England all-rounder Liam Livingstone ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, marking the end of a short and challenging stint with the franchise. Livingstone was one of two overseas players let go as RCB prepare to recalibrate their squad after the 2025 season.

Signed for a hefty INR 8.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, Livingstone was expected to play a major role with both bat and ball. However, his performances fell below expectations as he managed only 112 runs and picked up two wickets, numbers far from his capabilities.

Livingstone featured in 10 of RCB’s 16 matches, including the final, but struggled to cement a consistent role. Despite his proven T20 pedigree, he was unable to find rhythm with the bat or his handy spin options, resulting in stints on the bench during crucial phases of the season.

The franchise acknowledged that such high-profile decisions are never easy, especially when dealing with a player of Livingstone’s stature.

RCB’s Director of Cricket Mo Bobat spoke candidly about the emotional challenge behind releasing the England star. In an episode of RCB Bold Diaries, Bobat reflected on Livingstone’s professionalism and the respect he commanded inside the dressing room.

“On a personal level, I and we release Livi with a very heavy heart. I’m very fond of Livi as a player, but also as a person. I really enjoyed my time with him,” Bobat told RCB Bold Diaries.

He also highlighted Livingstone’s exceptional conduct during periods when he was not selected in the XI – a phase that can often test a senior international player’s patience.

“A huge amount of integrity in how he went about the period where he was left out of the team. Because that would have been difficult for a player like him, who’s a seasoned international. So he did contribute hugely and his attitude was great. But he has high standards for himself, I know what he’s capable of.”

The comments underline the strong rapport Livingstone maintained with the coaching staff and teammates despite the lack of on-field returns.

The decision to release Livingstone reflects RCB’s broader objective of reshaping their overseas contingent with an eye on balance, form, and long-term planning. With the IPL 2026 auction approaching, RCB are expected to target power-hitters and versatile all-rounders who can offer consistent impact throughout the season.

Current squad: Rajat Patidar (captain), Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Krunal Pandya, Josh Hazlewood, Tim David, Jitesh Sharma, Devdutt Padikkal, Nuwan Thushara, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Bethell, Romario Shepherd, Suyash Sharma, Swapnil Singh, Yash Dayal, Abhinandan Singh, Rasikh Dar.
