India won the first ODI by four wickets against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara, to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 300/8 in their 50 overs. Devon Conway scored 56 off 67 balls, Henry Nicholls contributed 62 from 69 deliveries, and Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 84 off 71 balls, which included five fours and three sixes. For India, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna were the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets each.
In reply, India successfully chased down the target, reaching 306/6 in 49 overs. The chase was anchored by Virat Kohli, who played a composed knock of 93 off 91 balls, while captain Gill supported him with 56 off 71 deliveries. Despite a fine bowling effort from Kyle Jamieson, who finished with figures of 4/41 from his 10 overs, New Zealand could not prevent India from sealing the victory.
Veteran batter Virat Kohli was the standout performer with the bat in the match. He scored a composed 93 off 91 balls, which included eight fours and one six. Kohli anchored India’s chase by stitching together two crucial partnerships, a 118-run stand for the second wicket with Shubman Gill in 107 balls, followed by a 77-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer in 76 deliveries for the third wicket, guiding India steadily towards the target.
New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson was the standout bowler of the match. He finished with impressive figures of 4/41 from his 10 overs, including a maiden, at an economy rate of 4.10. Jamieson claimed the key wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Ravindra Jadeja, briefly swinging the momentum in New Zealand’s favour.
Virat Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Match for his composed 93 off 91 balls, during which he forged two crucial partnerships with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to guide India’s successful chase. In ODI chases of 300 or more, Kohli has amassed 1,091 runs at a remarkable average of 121.22 across 12 innings, including seven centuries and two half-centuries.
India will take on New Zealand in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday, January 14 in Niranjan Shah Stadium, Khandheri, Rajkot.
