IND vs SA 2025: Shubman Gill hospitalized in Kolkata, set to be under observation after neck pain

India captain Shubman Gill had to retire himself out after facing his third delivery on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After playing a sweep shot for a boundary that got him off the mark, Gill experienced a sudden stiffness in his neck, post which, the team physio advised him to leave the crease.

In the latest update, the star cricketer has reportedly been admitted to a hospital in Kolkata to treat his neck pain. The report has further added that Gill will be under observation for the entire night, and a call on his further participation will depend on the development. The cricketing fraternity is praying for a speedy recovery of the ace batter.

"Shubman Gill admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata after experiencing pain in the neck. He is expected to be there all night and under observation," Revsportz reported via their social media in the evening after the end of the second day's play.

It is worth mentioning that Gill was facing some discomfort in his neck even before the play commenced on Saturday, indicating that he had some issue even before taking his guard at the crease. Previously in 2024, Gill missed the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand due to a neck spasm, which cites that the issue may be a recurring one for the Punjab-born.

While Gill could not come out to bat again, India had to wrap their innings off for just 189, with a 30-run lead against the Proteas. In his absence, Rishabh Pant took charge as the interim captain. Pant utilized the bowlers well to keep things tight, as the match is currently in favour of the hosts. South Africa currently lead by 63 runs and have only three wickets in hand to set a target.

With the 26-year-old not being in a position to take the field, the Indians will be under a huge threat to chase the target set by the Temba Bavuma-led side on a difficult Eden pitch. The BCCI is expected to provide an update on the Indian skipper soon, as he has undoubtedly been one of the best batters of the Test side currently, with the kind of recent form that he has shown.
