IND vs SA 2025: Shubman Gill released from hospital, advised to rest as participation in Guwahati Test hangs in the balance

Shubman Gill couldn't play too much of a part in the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. After leading the side commendably during South Africa's first innings, the Indian captain sustained a neck injury while batting on Day 2 (Saturday, November 15). He had faced just three balls and scored four runs before the pain was excruciating enough for him to walk off the field.
Shubman was subsequently admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, where his condition was assessed. The 26-year-old couldn't take any further part in the first Test, as Rishabh Pant had to take over as the stand-in captain. The home side lost by 30 runs, failing to chase down a 124-run target on Sunday, November 16.
Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly had visited the hospital to meet Shubman. They had a 15-minute conversation as well.
Cricket enthusiasts will be relieved to know that Shubman has been discharged from the hospital. He is now able to walk as well as move his neck without much discomfort. According to RevSportz, Shubman has been advised 4-5 days of rest. However, dark clouds of uncertainty still hover over his participation in the second Test, which is set to be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Shubman will have a maximum of five days to rest before the second Test gets underway on Saturday, November 22. The Indian team desperately need their captain back in the line-up after the debacle in Kolkata.
Shubman has been in scintillating form in the Test arena ever since being appointed as captain. He was the highest run-scorer during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year in England. In the recent two-match series at home against the West Indies, the Punjab batter once again showed his prowess, scoring 192 runs in three innings at an average of 96.
SA legend refutes Gambhir's pitch defence post 1st Test loss
If Shubman doesn't recover fully ahead of the second Test and has to miss out, India will have to pick either Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal as his replacement.
