India vs South Africa’s second Test in Guwahati produced a gripping second day’s play, headlined by a searing Jasprit Bumrah dismissal and a mammoth South African first-innings total of 489. After resuming on 247/6, the visitors rode on Senuran Muthusamy’s century and Marco Jansen’s belligerent 93 to put India under serious scoreboard pressure in the Freedom Trophy clash.

Bumrah’s most eye‑catching moment of the day came when he shattered Simon Harmer’s off stump with an unplayable delivery that instantly went viral among fans. Operating from wide of the crease, Bumrah angled the ball into Harmer on a back‑of‑a‑length line before it straightened wickedly off the surface, squaring up the right‑hander and crashing into the top of off as the batter walked away without even looking back.

The dismissal, recorded at 143.1 overs with Harmer gone for 5 off 17 balls, left South Africa 462/9 and finally rewarded Bumrah for a tireless spell in which he repeatedly attacked the stumps on an unresponsive pitch. Bumrah finished with 2/75 from 32 overs, maintaining relentless control at an economy rate barely above two runs per over, and his late strike briefly raised India’s hopes of wrapping up the innings under 470. However, Keshav Maharaj’s composure at one end and Jansen’s counter‑punching assault earlier in the session ensured South Africa still pushed their total close to 500.

South Africa started Day 2 at 247/6, and India’s plan was clearly to knock over the tail quickly and keep the visitors under 350, but Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne first blunted that ambition with a composed morning stand. Muthusamy progressed from his overnight 25* to a well‑crafted hundred, bringing up his century off 192 balls and shepherding the lower order with remarkable calm on a pitch that rewarded patience more than stroke‑making flair.

Once Verreynne fell for 45, stumped off Ravindra Jadeja with the score at 334, Jansen transformed the innings with a stunning 93 off 91 balls that changed the tempo of the match. Jansen mixed clean straight hitting with powerful pulls, striking six fours and seven sixes, and reached his fifty in just 53 deliveries as South Africa surged from 360/7 to beyond 450 in the space of a single session. The pair added 138 runs for the eighth wicket at a brisk rate, repeatedly forcing India’s spinners and seamers off their lengths and exploiting the slower afternoon conditions in Guwahati.

India’s attack was led statistically by Kuldeep, who took 4/115 in 29.1 overs, including crucial breakthroughs of Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder and the dangerous Jansen at the very end to terminate the innings on 489. Jadeja chipped in with 2/94, while Mohammed Siraj claimed 2/106, but the inability to separate Muthusamy and Jansen through two full sessions turned what had been a balanced contest at 247/6 into a daunting scenario for Rishabh Pant’s side.
