As the first session of Day 1 progresses in Kolkata, South Africa chose to bat after winning the toss. They reached lunch at 105/3 in 27 overs, with a steady, if not explosive, start. Markram and Ryan Rickelton both made starts but fell to key breakthroughs, with Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav striking crucial blows for India.

South Africa’s innings got off to a reasonable start with Markram and Rickelton sharing a 50-run stand before Bumrah made the first breakthrough, removing Rickelton for 23. Markram followed soon after, caught by Pant off Bumrah for 31. Temba Bavuma’s captaincy was undermined by a sharp delivery from Kuldeep, which dismissed him for just 3. Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi, however, held firm through the first session, with Mulder unbeaten on 22 and de Zorzi on 15, as they look to stabilize the innings after the early setbacks. Despite the wickets, the visitors have shown resilience, ensuring that India could not capitalize further.
