West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 25% of his match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for an incident with Indian top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Speaking of the incident, Seales threw the ball back to Jaiswal in an aggressive fashion on Day 1 of the second Test between India and West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as the ball hit the pads of batter. Seales' gesture was deemed a violation of the Code of Conduct by match officials even though he had issued an immediate apology to the left-handed batter.
Seales' act has been deemed a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct under Article 2.9 of the Code. Seales' disciplinary record also sees one demerit point added. This is his second demerit point in the current 24-month period.
The right-arm pacer challenged the charges levelled against him, which meant a formal hearing was required. Seales claimed that the throw was made only in an attempt to effect a run-out. However, match referee Andy Pycroft opined that the throw was "unnecessary'" and "inappropriate".
Seales went wicketless in India's first innings of the ongoing Test, with his figures reading 0/88 in 22 overs. At stumps on Day 3, West Indies were 173/2 in 49 overs, following on after getting bundled out for 248 in 81.5 overs in their first innings. They still trail the hosts by 97 runs heading into the fourth day of the contest.
John Campbell (87* off 145) and Shai Hope (66* off 103) stood unbeaten at the crease. The duo will aim to build on their score and put India under pressure. Notably, the first match went into the hands of India by an innings and 140 runs.
