IND vs WI 2025: Shubman Gill goes past Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli's illustrious captaincy milestone

Shubman Gill created history by going past records set by legendary India batters like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Gill's ton in New Delhi during the ongoing game against the West Indies was his fifth Test century as captain, coming in only his twelfth innings as the Indian skipper. He remained unbeaten on 129 as India declared on 518/5 during the second session on Saturday.
With this, he became the second-quickest Indian (in terms of innings) to get to the milestone. Only Alastair Cook (9 innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) took fewer innings to get to the feat as the captains of their respective sides. This was also only the third time an Indian captain has notched up five Test tons in an individual calendar year.
Kohli, who is no longer a Test cricketer, has done it twice before (scoring five Test hundreds in a calendar year). However, the Fazilka-born, playing his seventh match as the captain, became the quickest to do so before Kohli took 18 innings. Veteran batter Sachin, on the other hand, had scored four tons as Test captain in 1997.
Earlier in the day, the 26-year-old was involved in a horror run-out with top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal had to depart for 175 off 258, and any hopes of a double-ton vanished immediately. However, the Punjab-based cricketer put everything behind him to get to a splendid ton. Gill's 196-ball knock comprised 16 fours and a couple of glorious sixes.

Thankfully for India, Jaiswal was all smiles after Gill got to his ton, and could be seen applauding the right-handed batter from the dressing room, as shown on air. Dhruv Jurel's (44 off 79) wicket brought about the hosts' declaration after they played 134.2 overs. With this, the hosts have put them in a strong position to be whitewashing the visitors in the two-match series.
