Star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, aged 36, delivered a dominant performance in the two-match Test series against the West Indies, which India swept with a seven-wicket victory in the second match on Tuesday (October 14). Jadeja was deservedly named the Player of the Series, capping off a display of formidable skill with both bat and ball.

However, in the post-match presentation, Jadeja offered a candid explanation for his success, crediting a key strategic change implemented by head coach Gautam Gambhir.

The core reason for Jadeja’s enhanced performance, according to the player himself, is his elevation in the batting order. He confirmed that moving up to the crucial number six position has fundamentally altered his approach to the game.

“As Gauti bhai (Gambhir) said, I am at number six now. So I am thinking more as a proper batsman, and that works for me,” Jadeja stated during the post-match ceremony.

This mindset shift represents a significant evolution from his previous role. Jadeja explained that for many years, his position at number eight or nine necessitated a “different” mindset. Now, thinking “more as a proper batter” has evidently brought out the best in his capabilities. This change appears to be part of a broader, sustained team philosophy. “I think we know what brand of cricket we’ve been playing over the last five, six months. So, that’s a good sign as a team that we continue to do it over a long period of time,” he added, highlighting the consistent strategy under Gambhir.

Jadeja’s performance metrics fully justified the Player of the Series award. His most notable contribution came in the opening game in Ahmedabad, where he compiled a crucial 104-run knock with the bat. Complementing this batting prowess, he was equally impactful with the ball, picking up eight wickets across the two matches.

Despite the accolades and impressive statistics, Jadeja maintained that he does not chase milestones. His focus remains firmly on his role as an all-rounder and ensuring he delivers with both disciplines to justify his place in the playing XI.

“To be honest, I don’t think too much about records. I just focus on contributing with both bat and ball to help my team win. I always look forward to doing that,” he elaborated. “I feel if I don’t perform with bat and ball, then it doesn’t reflect my value as a player.”

The success of the Indian team, according to the all-rounder, is rooted in the collective effort and consistent high performance across the squad’s batting and bowling units. Jadeja’s revitalized confidence and contribution from the number six spot is expected to be a major factor in India’s future Test assignments.
