The first Test of the India vs West Indies series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which started on October 2, 2025, quickly turned into a one-sided contest by Day 3. India dominated with the bat and ball, setting a formidable total of 448/5 declared, thanks to commanding centuries from KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, and Ravindra Jadeja. As the West Indies began their second innings, their batsmen struggled against India’s incisive bowling attack and electric fielding, with a key moment being Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable low catch on Day 3.
In the 20.6th over of the West Indies innings, India’s Jadeja bowled a slightly short delivery outside off to West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope. Hope attempted an aggressive cut shot but only managed to edge it. The ball looped up towards the short third man region where Jaiswal was stationed. Demonstrating extraordinary reflexes and agility, Jaiswal dived to his right to secure a sharp low catch, denying Hope any further contribution. Hope’s innings lasted just 14 balls in which he scored a solitary run, as India tightened their grip on the match. This catch was especially significant for Jaiswal, who was visibly thrilled after the grab, bouncing back impressively from earlier lapses in fielding during the Australia and England tours. At that stage, West Indies were crumbling, having lost five wickets for just 46 runs, a collapse hastened by the relentless pressure from Indian spinners and pacers alike.

After declaring their imposing first innings, India systematically dismantled the West Indies batting lineup. The visitors were bowled out for 162 in their first innings, trailing by 286 runs. On Day 3, West Indies started their second innings precariously, losing early wickets to the Indian bowling attack. The combination of pacers like Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah along with the spin duo of Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav proved lethal. Jadeja took three quick wickets, including that of Hope, and was instrumental in crippling the West Indies middle order. West Indies were struggling at 98 for 8 in their second innings, still trailing by 188 runs with just two wickets in hand.
Indian batters set a strong platform with contributions from Rahul, Jurel, and Jadeja himself, who remained unbeaten on 104. The partnership of Jurel and Jadeja was particularly crucial, with a 206-run stand for the fifth wicket that allowed India to post a daunting total. The West Indies showed little resistance in their chase, losing wickets regularly and failing to establish any significant partnerships. With the run rate steadily climbing and wickets tumbling, India closed in on a comfortable win before tea on Day 3, maintaining control and momentum to possibly wrap up the match in the next session.
This dominant display in Ahmedabad signals India’s intent to consolidate their position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, while the West Indies face a testing challenge to avoid defeat early in the series.
