India (IND) and South Africa (SA) are all set to clash against each other in the second T20I of the five-match series at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Thursday, December 11. It is worth noting that after winning the opening contest, the Men in Blue will look to extend their lead.
In the first T20I at Cuttack, South Africa were bowled out for their lowest-ever T20I total of 74 to hand India a dominant 101-run win. The star of the night was Hardik Pandya, who made a memorable comeback with an unbeaten 28-ball 59 that pushed the hosts to 175/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
India’s innings got off to a poor note as Suryakumar Yadav fell after hitting a four and six, and Shubman Gill’s return from injury lasted just two deliveries. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma stabilized the innings, while Axar Patel added important runs before Pandya took on the opposition bowlers.
Meanwhile, the visitors' chase never got going. Arshdeep Singh removed Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs early, while Axar, Jasprit Bumrah, Pandya, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Shivam Dube joined the wicket-taking spree. Apart from Dewald Brevis’ 22, the South African had no answers and folded in just 12.3 overs.
The surface at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur in New Chandigarh, offers a balanced contest between bat and ball. The pitch favours batters early on, thanks to the quick outfield. Spinners become effective as the innings progress, especially in the second half. Overall, it is a venue where batters will enjoy more success than bowlers.
Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma(w), Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh
Quinton de Kock(w), Aiden Markram(c), Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Donovan Ferreira, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje
Left-handed batter Tilak Varma played an important role in stabilising India’s innings after losing early wickets. Initially, he took on Marco Jansen in the sixth over with a pair of boundaries. However, his 89-metre six off Anrich Nortje sailed out of the stadium. Though he managed to score just 26 runs, he looked in good shape and will be hoping to continue that in the coming game.
Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah could be among the picks of the bowlers in the second T20I against South Africa. In the last game, he dismissed the young Dewald Brevis with a ball that forced a top edge. With that dismissal, he joined Arshdeep Singh in entering the elite 100-T20I-wicket club, making him the second Indian to do so. Bumrah will hope to capitalize on the conditions to his advantage in the next game.
