India created history at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, lifting their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title after a commanding 52-run victory over South Africa in the 2025 final.
The win marked a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket, showcasing their rise as a global force and ending years of near misses on the world stage. Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 298/7, built around a fearless innings from Shafali Verma, who struck a superb 87 off 78 balls. She shared a 104-run opening stand with Smriti Mandhana (45) – only the second century opening partnership in a Women’s World Cup final. Later, Deepti Sharma (58) and Richa Ghosh (34 off 24) added valuable runs in the death overs, ensuring India crossed the 290-mark and set South Africa a daunting target in front of a packed home crowd.
India’s bowling unit, led by Deepti Sharma, produced a match-winning display to seal the nation’s long-awaited world title. Deepti followed her batting heroics with an extraordinary five-wicket haul (5/39), ripping through South Africa’s middle order with her precision and flight. She also created history by becoming the first player in Women’s World Cup knockout history to score a fifty and take a five-for in the same match. Supported by Shafali’s two wickets and a disciplined spell from Sree Charani, India bowled out South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs.
For South Africa, captain Laura Wolvaardt scored a brilliant 101 off 98 balls, keeping her team in contention before India’s spinners turned the game decisively.
