Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spoiled Gujarat Titans' (GT) party to some extent as their 33-run win on Thursday, May 22, has made the Shubman Gill-led side's chances of finishing in the top two a bit more difficult.
Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first on a belter of a track at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh once again gave LSG a splendid start, adding 91 runs inside the first 10 overs.
After Markram was dismissed for a 24-ball 36, it was the partnership between Marsh and Nicholas Pooran that stole the show. Lucknow amassed 235/2 on the back of Marsh's 64-ball 117 and Pooran's unbeaten 56 off 27 deliveries.
In reply, Gujarat's middle-order got tested after the in-form trio of Shubman, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler couldn't capitalise on their starts in a rare ocassion. Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan hung around, but in the end they had too many runs to contend with. The Titans were restricted to 202/9 in their 20 overs.
Marsh took the attack to the Gujarat bowlers from the outset and finished with 117 off 64 balls, belting 10 fours and eight sixes. He reached the three-figure mark off 56 balls. The Australian all-rounder's partnership of 121 runs off 52 balls helped Lucknow get to a massive total.
Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford did not have many opportunities to show their prowess this season as the GT top-order had been on song. However, on Thursday, they got their chance and the duo showed that they are capable of producing the goods. Rutherford scored a 22-ball 38, while Shahrukh contributed with 57 off 29 deliveries. Their 86-run partnership off 40 balls gave GT hopes of a miraculous win, however, the 235-run target proved too much in the end despite their efforts.
New Zealand pacer William O'Rourke had a tremendous outing with the ball. With not much assistance available for bowlers, O'Rourke used his variations to great effect and made life difficult for the power hitters. He bagged the wickets of Sudharsan, Rutherford, and Rahul Tewatia, conceding just 27 runs in his four overs.
