Royal Challengers Bengaluru stormed into the Finals of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League with a resounding eight-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
RCB took charge of proceedings after opting to field first. PBKS ended up losing four wickets by the end of the powerplay. Among the top five batters, Prabhsimran Singh (18 off 10), was the only player to obtain double figures. Suyash Sharma made an immediate impression with the ball. The leg-spinner started off with a double-wicket over. He dismissed Shashank Singh (three off five) and Musheer Khan (0 off 3).
Suyash returned in his next over to dismiss Marcus Stoinis, Punjab’s highest scorer. The Australian power-hitterhad to head back to the pavilion after accumulating 26 off 17 deliveries. PBKS were ultimately bundled over for a miserly 101 in just 14.1 overs. The number of overs the Shreyas Iyer-led side batted became the least overs batted by any team in the history of IPL Playoffs as well.
Bengaluru initiated the run-chase by scoring 30/0 at the end of three overs. Kyle Jamieson's wicket-maiden in inside the powerplay included the dismissal of Virat Kohli for a run-a-ball 12. Mayank Agarwal joined Phil Salt in the middle. It was courtesy of the latter's assertive stroke play that the side propelled their score to 61/1 at the end of six overs. Victory was well within sight for the visitors.
Agarwal (19 off 13) was Musheer Khan's maiden IPL wicket. However, it was the case of "too little, too late". Salt remained unbeaten on 56 off 27 deliveries. This was his fourth half-century of the season. Meanwhile, captain Rajat Patidar remained unbeaten too, scoring 15 off eight deliveries, as RCB's clinical display saw them winning with half their overs to spare.
