The five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have officially sealed their spot in the IPL 2025 Playoffs after a comprehensive 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Wednesday, May 21. With this win, MI became the fourth and the final team to get through the league stage and have now joined Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the race for the elusive trophy.
In the first innings, MI posted a competitive total of 180 runs, courtesy of a brilliant knock of 73* off 43 balls from Suryakumar Yadav. The rest of the MI batting line-up chipped in with decent contributions to build a strong total. For DC, Mukesh Kumar picked up two wickets but conceded 48 runs in his four-over spell.
In the chase, DC struggled from the start as MI bowlers kept striking at regular intervals. Sameer Rizvi's 39-run knock did show a ray of hope, but that was brought to still by Mitchell Santner with his maginficent spell with the ball.
MI’s bowling attack was led by Mitchell Santner, who delivered a brilliant spell by taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs in his four overs. Jasprit Bumrah also claimed 3 wickets for just 12 runs in 3.2 overs. After the loss, DC were officially knocked out of the tournament.
Suryakumar Yadav brought up his half-century in style by smashing the first ball of the 19th over, which was bowled by Mukesh Kumar for a towering six.
Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav unleashed a late assault by smashing 48 runs in the final two overs to give MI a strong finish.
Mitchell Santner struck twice in his final over, first clean bowling Sameer Rizvi and then dismissing Ashutosh Sharma with a brilliant stumping by Ryan Rickelton a few deliveries later in the same over.
