Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) suffered a middle-order collapse against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to lose a high-scoring clash by 42 runs at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, May 23.
Jitesh Sharma stepped out for the toss and said that regular captain Rajat Patidar will come in as the Impact Player. He elected to field first on a belter of a track. Sunrisers got off to a blistering start as Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head forged a 54-run stand inside the first four overs. However, they were dismissed in the space of three balls.
Ishan Kishan held the innings together, playing a blinder of an innings. He fell six runs short of his second century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verma also chipped in with useful contributions as SRH smashed 231/6 in their 20 overs.
In reply, RCB got off to a solid start as Phil Salt and Virat Kohli added 80 runs inside the first seven overs. However, Kohli perished for a 25-ball 43. Mayank Agarwal and Rajat Patidar couldn't up the ante after getting starts. Jitesh Sharma played an enterprising cameo, but once he was dismissed, RCB were all but out of the run-chase. In the end, they finished on 189. The Bengaluru-based franchise missed out on a chance to reach the top of the points table. It will now be difficult for them to finish in the top two with just one game remaining.
Ishan Kishan started the season with a century, but his form dipped suddenly. However, he showed his class in SRH's penultimate match of the campaign. Kishan scored a brilliant 94 not-out off 48 deliveries, hitting seven fours and five sixes. He didn't let the run rate drop even when SRH kept losing wickets at the backend.
Pat Cummins played a vital cameo of 13 not out off six balls. However, he was immaculate with the ball in hand. The SRH captain took the key wicket of Phil Salt, who was threatening to take the game away from the Sunrisers. In the backend of the innings, he took the wickets of Krunal Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to finish with excellent figures of 3/28 in four overs. RCB were in the chase till the 15th over. However, they lost the wickets of Patidar, Romario Shepherd, and Jitesh in the space of five balls and that turned the game in SRH's favour.
RCB fans' hearts skipped a beat when Tim David pulled up with a hamstring injury while fielding in the first innings. He signalled immediately to the dugout that he was injured. The Australian batter was forced to leave the field along with the physio. David did make an attempt to come and bat but he could only hobble a single before being dismissed off the fifth ball he faced. The RCB management will be keeping a close eye on his injury status as he has proven to be an integral part of the franchise this season.
