IPL 2026: Anil Kumble decodes how Vaibhav Suryavanshi outsmarted Jasprit Bumrah in RR vs MI clash

In a format where bowlers—especially elite ones—usually stay a step ahead, it was a refreshing twist to see a young batter seize control against one of the world’s finest pacers. The Indian Premier League has often been a platform for such breakout performances, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s fearless knock against Jasprit Bumrah turned heads for exactly that reason.
Legendary spinner Anil Kumble was full of praise for the Rajasthan Royals youngster, highlighting the tactical intelligence behind his aggressive strokeplay. Speaking after the match, Kumble pointed out how unusual it was to see Bumrah being dictated to, rather than the other way around.
According to Kumble, Suryavanshi didn’t just react—he anticipated. After launching the first delivery he faced from Bumrah for a six, the young batter subtly forced the bowler to rethink his approach. Instead of allowing Bumrah to control the duel, Suryavanshi flipped the script by setting him up for a slower ball.
Kumble explained that this anticipation was key. Expecting the variation, Suryavanshi stayed ready and punished the delivery with another towering six, showcasing not just power but also sharp game awareness. The former India captain also lauded the youngster’s remarkable strike rate, noting how consistently he has maintained an ultra-aggressive tempo in recent outings.
“Sooryavanshi makes it look easy against one of the world’s best bowlers. First ball, he hits him for a six and then sets him up. He set the bowler up, not the other way around. We’ve generally seen Bumrah set up batters so many times, but here, Sooryavanshi set Bumrah up to bowl that slower ball on the third delivery, and he was waiting for it to hit him for another six. It was brilliant batting by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, just the way he strikes the ball and the consistency he has shown in terms of strike-rate. He is striking at close to 300 in every game and scoring more than 30 runs consistently, which is outstanding,” Kumble said on JioHotstar.
The match, played in Guwahati, was reduced to an 11-over-a-side contest due to rain, adding urgency to every delivery. Opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryavanshi wasted no time in taking charge.
Facing Bumrah for the first time in his career, the youngster displayed no signs of hesitation, smashing two massive sixes in the second over. His innings, though brief, was electric—39 runs off just 14 balls that shifted momentum decisively in Rajasthan Royals’ favour.
Jaiswal complemented the aggression with a superb unbeaten 77 off 32 deliveries, ensuring the pressure never eased. The duo’s fearless approach powered the Rajasthan Royals to a formidable 150/3 in their allotted overs.
