IPL 2026 auction likely to be held overseas, Abu Dhabi frontrunner to host

There appears to be a shift in plans regarding the IPL 2026 auction venue, which is now likely to be held overseas. While the franchises have not yet been officially informed about the city, they have reportedly been hinted about the development.
The Gulf region has emerged as the most probable destination, with Abu Dhabi (UAE) leading the race to host the event. However, other Middle Eastern locations such as Oman and Qatar are also being considered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
This marks a departure from earlier plans, as the BCCI initially appeared keen to host the auction in India. However, logistical challenges, particularly difficulties in securing a suitable venue during the festival and wedding season, have prompted the board to look abroad once again.
As previously reported by Cricbuzz, the auction is expected to take place in mid-December, most likely during the second half of the month. The BCCI is expected to formally announce the date and venue before November 15, the deadline for franchises to submit their retention and release lists ahead of IPL 2026.
With the retention deadline barely two weeks away, discussions surrounding player retention and releases have begun to intensify across franchises. The biggest talking point at the moment is the potential trade of Sanju Samson, which has generated significant buzz in IPL circles.
Several franchises continue to rate the India wicketkeeper-batter highly, despite his inconsistent performances in international cricket, including during the recent Asia Cup and the ongoing series in Australia. However, Samson’s proven track record as a reliable IPL performer continues to make him a valuable asset in franchise cricket.
The latest developments regarding his possible trade are expected to unfold in the coming days, with Rajasthan Royals’ lead owner Manoj Badale set to arrive in Mumbai on Tuesday. Based in the UK, Badale’s visit is expected to play a crucial role in finalising key retention decisions, including those involving Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, both believed to be on the potential release list during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach. With Kumar Sangakkara now back at the helm, it remains to be seen whether there will be a change of stance regarding the two Sri Lankan spinners.
Meanwhile, there has also been some chatter around Mohammed Shami, though Sunrisers Hyderabad are reportedly reluctant to release the veteran India pacer. The franchise is understood to have received trade offers for Shami but has declined them so far. Elsewhere, a string of releases is expected from Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and possibly Kolkata Knight Riders, as franchises look to free up purse space ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
