IPL 2026: CSK head coach Stephen Fleming gives latest update on Dewald Brevis’ injury

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may finally have something to smile about after a difficult start to their IPL 2026 campaign. Following three consecutive defeats, the five-time champions have been searching for answers, both in terms of form and team balance. Now, there is a ray of hope on the horizon.

Head coach Stephen Fleming has shared a positive update regarding young South African batter Dewald Brevis, who has missed the opening phase of the tournament due to a side strain. The 22-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most exciting talents in world cricket, could make his return in CSK’s upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11.

Fleming sounded cautiously optimistic while speaking after the team’s loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With a five-day break before their next game, CSK have taken a careful approach to Brevis’s recovery.

“We hope he is going to be right for the next game. We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative, and hopefully, these next five days go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It’s a big loss, but we are looking forward to getting him back,” Fleming said.

The management’s decision to be patient reflects how important Brevis is to the side. Rather than rushing him back, CSK have prioritized long-term fitness, ensuring he returns fully fit instead of risking further injury.

Brevis had picked up the side strain during a training session before CSK’s opening match of the season, ruling him out at a crucial time when the team needed stability in their batting lineup.

Encouragingly for CSK fans, Brevis appears to be progressing well in his recovery. Over the past few days, he has gradually increased his involvement in training sessions, showing no visible signs of discomfort.

Ahead of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) clash, he was seen facing throwdowns and participating in fielding drills. More recently, before the RCB game, he spent around 20 minutes in the nets, comfortably handling deliveries from assistant coach Rajiv Kumar. His movements looked smooth, and there were no indications of lingering pain.

Adding to the optimism, Brevis also joined his teammates for a casual football session after practice – often a sign that a player is nearing full fitness. These small but significant steps suggest that he is on track to return soon.

For CSK, his comeback couldn’t come at a better time.

The team currently sits at the bottom of the points table, yet to register a single win and struggling with a negative net run rate. Their batting unit, in particular, has lacked the spark and aggression needed in modern T20 cricket.

This is where Brevis becomes crucial. Since joining CSK midway through IPL 2025, he has made a strong impression with his fearless approach. Scoring 225 runs in just six innings at a strike rate of 180, he quickly established himself as a game-changer in the middle order.

His ability to accelerate the scoring rate and take on bowlers in pressure situations earned him the nickname “Baby AB,” a nod to his resemblance in style to AB de Villiers. More importantly, it earned him the trust of the franchise, leading to his retention for the 2026 season.

CSK have also been without MS Dhoni, who is still recovering from a calf injury. His absence has left a noticeable gap in leadership and composure, especially during crunch moments.

With Dhoni sidelined and the batting unit struggling, Brevis’ return could provide the much-needed balance and firepower. He not only strengthens the lineup but also allows CSK to field a more settled combination of overseas players.
