IPL 2026: Here’s why PBKS stars Nehal Wadhera and Xavier Bartlett are not playing today’s game against SRH

As the IPL 2026 league stage enters a crucial phase, every team is making calculated selection calls to gain an edge in must-win encounters. Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) also made a few notable changes to their playing XIs for the blockbuster clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. While some key names returned to strengthen the balance of their respective sides, a few prominent players were surprisingly left out of the starting lineup, leaving fans eager to understand the tactical thinking behind the decisions.
Young batter Nehal Wadhera and Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett were left out of the starting lineup, sparking curiosity among fans ahead of the high-pressure contest. However, the decisions were driven more by tactical requirements and team balance rather than form concerns, with PBKS management opting for experienced campaigners and specific match-up advantages against a dangerous SRH side. The changes underline PBKS’s intent to adapt according to conditions and opposition strengths as the race for the playoffs intensifies.
One of the biggest reasons behind Wadhera’s absence from the playing XI is the return of Shashank Singh. The middle-order batter missed the previous game due to a minor injury concern, but after recovering fully, he walked straight back into the side. Shashank has been one of PBKS’s most dependable batters this season, especially during pressure situations in the middle and death overs. His calm finishing ability and experience have given Punjab stability in several close matches, making him difficult to ignore for a crunch fixture like this one.
The second major change came in the bowling department, where Bartlett made way for New Zealand speedster Lockie Ferguson. The decision is understood to be heavily influenced by the Hyderabad pitch and SRH’s explosive batting lineup. While Bartlett has impressed with his ability to swing the new ball and deliver disciplined powerplay overs, PBKS felt Ferguson’s extra pace and experience in pressure situations could prove more effective.
Ferguson’s ability to consistently bowl above 145 km/h, along with his expertise at the death, played a key role in the selection call. With SRH boasting aggressive batters capable of dominating spin and medium pace, PBKS opted for raw speed to counterattack. Importantly, neither Wadhera nor Bartlett has been completely sidelined. Both players are included in PBKS’s list of Impact Player substitutes and could still feature later in the game depending on the situation.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad also made a notable change to their XI by bringing back Nitish Kumar Reddy. The talented all-rounder missed the previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders due to illness but returned after recovering fully.
Reddy’s comeback forced Aniket Verma to move to the substitutes bench. SRH management values Reddy’s all-round package highly, as he provides both middle-order stability and useful overs with the ball.
Punjab Kings: Prabhsimran Singh(w), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer(c), Shashank Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Lockie Ferguson, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal
