IPL 2026: Irfan Pathan reveals tactics to neutralize Delhi Capitals’ opener before SRH encounter

As the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season intensifies, the upcoming clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium has become the talk of the town. Scheduled for Tuesday, this encounter is not just about points; it is a tactical chess match. Former Indian all-rounder and veteran analyst Irfan Pathan has weighed in on the battle, specifically highlighting how SRH’s emerging pace duo can neutralize a resurgent Delhi top order.
Pathan’s insights focus on the high-stakes opening exchanges, where the experience of DC’s marquee names meets the raw, unbridled energy of Hyderabad’s scouting gems. With both teams fighting for momentum in the mid-season scramble, these individual matchups could dictate the tempo of the entire evening.
The primary focal point for Pathan is the battle for the Powerplay. DC’s opener KL Rahul has found his rhythm at the perfect time, fresh off a commanding half-century against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. For SRH to restrict DC to a manageable total, they must find a way to dismiss Rahul before he anchors the innings. Pathan believes the responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of SRH’s young guns, Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain.
“The biggest matchup will be KL Rahul against the young fast bowlers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain. I am very excited for this contest because KL Rahul played a very good innings in the last match, scored a fifty and looked in complete control. He looked in form and is a very good player of fast bowling,” said Pathan on his YouTube channel.
Pathan emphasized that Hinge, in particular, needs to show better tactical maturity than in his previous outing. Against Sanju Samson, Hinge was punished for a lack of variation, a mistake he cannot afford against someone as technically sound as Rahul. Pathan advised a shift in length to keep the batter guessing.
“Regarding Hinge, as I mentioned before the last match, he should avoid bowling short balls against Sanju Samson. The first ball he bowled to him was hit for a six. Against KL Rahul, if he makes a mistake, KL Rahul will punish him. So he will need to vary his lengths. With the new ball, can he bowl a fuller length early on?,” he questioned, suggesting that swing and search for the edge are better bets than back-of-a-length aggression.

While Hinge provides the pace, Sakib Hussain has emerged as the X-factor for SRH due to his exceptional control over his secondary deliveries. Sakib’s statistics this season are nothing short of elite, boasting five wickets in just two games with an economy rate of 7 and a staggering average of 11.20. Pathan views Sakib’s guile as the perfect weapon against DC’s middle-order engine room, specifically David Miller.
Pathan noted that the Killer Miller threat can be mitigated if Sakib uses the dimensions of the Hyderabad track to his advantage. The ability to take the ball away from the left-hander with subtle pace changes is where the game could be won or lost in the death overs.
“On the other hand, Sakib Hussain looks like a bowler who uses the slower ball very well. Especially against batters like David Miller in the Delhi team, when he bowls the slower one and takes the ball away, that matchup is going to be brilliant. I am really looking forward to that,” Pathan concluded.
As the sun sets over the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium this Tuesday, all eyes will be on whether these young SRH pacers can execute Pathan’s blueprint or if the experience of Rahul and Miller will reign supreme.
