The Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Mumbai Indians by four wickets in Match 65 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the iconic Eden Gardens on Wednesday, May 20.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians endured a shaky start as Ryan Rickelton departed cheaply in the second over. Rohit Sharma showed intent with a couple of towering sixes, but Saurabh Dubey struck twice in quick succession, removing Rohit and the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav to leave Mumbai reeling early in the powerplay. Cameron Green then added to MI’s troubles by dismissing Naman Dhir, reducing the visitors to 38/4 inside six overs.
Tilak Varma and skipper Hardik Pandya attempted to rebuild the innings cautiously, stitching together a steady partnership as the Knight Riders’ spinners tightened the screws through the middle overs. Sunil Narine, playing another crucial hand with the ball, dismissed Hardik for 26, while Varma struggled to accelerate on a slow surface.
Will Jacks provided a brief spark with a quickfire cameo before being run out brilliantly by Rinku Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy. Corbin Bosch then played a valuable late-innings knock, smashing an unbeaten 32 off 18 balls to push MI to a respectable 147/8 in their 20 overs. For the Knight Riders, Saurabh Dubey, Cameron Green, and Kartik Tyagi picked up two wickets each, while Narine delivered an economical spell of 1/13 from his four overs.
Chasing 148, Kolkata Knight Riders started positively despite losing Finn Allen early to Deepak Chahar. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane looked fluent during his brisk 21 before Corbin Bosch struck to give Mumbai an opening. Manish Pandey then anchored the chase beautifully, rotating strike smartly and finding boundaries regularly to keep the scoreboard moving.
Cameron Green failed to make an impact with the bat, but Rovman Powell shifted the momentum decisively in Kolkata’s favour with a powerful counterattacking innings. Powell took on the Mumbai spinners and pacers alike, smashing 40 off 30 balls, while Pandey continued to hold one end firmly. The pair added a crucial partnership that brought the equation firmly under control for the hosts.
Mumbai fought back through Bosch, who finished with impressive figures of 3/30, including the wickets of Rahane, Green, and Tejasvi Dahiya. Jasprit Bumrah also bowled with discipline and removed Pandey for a well-crafted 45 off 33 balls, briefly raising hopes for the visitors.
However, Rinku Singh remained calm under pressure and struck important boundaries late in the innings. Alongside Anukul Roy, he guided the three-time champions home in 18.5 overs with four wickets in hand.
