IPL 2026: LSG clears air on Rishabh Pant-Sanjiv Goenka on-field spat, backlash intensifies

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have finally addressed the viral on-field interaction between team owner Sanjiv Goenka and captain Rishabh Pant following their heavy defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026. However, what was intended as a clarification has instead fuelled further controversy, with fans questioning the authenticity of the franchise’s response.
The incident took place on April 1 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium after LSG suffered a six-wicket loss. Cameras captured Goenka in an animated conversation with Pant near the boundary rope, with head coach Justin Langer also present. Though the exchange had no audio, the body language suggested a tense discussion, quickly sparking debate online.
The visuals reminded fans of a similar moment in IPL 2024, when Goenka was seen publicly confronting then-captain KL Rahul after a defeat. That memory only intensified scrutiny around the latest incident.
In an attempt to control the narrative, LSG released a follow-up video on April 2 via social media platform X. The post carried the caption: “Not everything you see is the true story. Here’s the unfiltered post-match vibes, when cameras don’t cut.”
The video showed a contrasting scene — Pant and Goenka sharing a hug, smiling, and appearing relaxed. The franchise aimed to suggest that the earlier footage had been misinterpreted and that there was no conflict between the two.

Goenka also publicly backed his captain, stating: “This is a long season, and moments like these are part of building something meaningful. I have full confidence in our captain and the team to respond with strength.”
However, instead of settling the issue, the video triggered fresh criticism. Many fans pointed out visible empty stands in the background, raising doubts about whether the clip was actually filmed immediately after the match. This led to speculation that the interaction may have been staged later as part of damage control.
Some users even added community notes to the post, claiming the video presented a “manufactured perspective.” The attempt to clarify the situation ended up amplifying the controversy – a classic case of the Streisand Effect, where efforts to suppress or explain an issue only bring it more attention.

The controversy drew sharp reactions from prominent figures in the cricketing world. Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi launched a strong criticism of Goenka, writing: “I told you this guy… is a complete loser and joker of the highest order. I am seriously embarrassed by his behaviour. If I was still chairman and commissioner, I would have banned him immediately. There is a clause in the franchise agreement for this exact issue. #BCCI implement it.”
He further criticized the broader culture, stating: “While football league owners treat players with respect… IPL owners are often busy chasing hype and headlines, publicly berating captains right on the boundary after tough losses.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan also reacted, posting: “One game into the tournament… no need for this.”
As LSG prepare for their next fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the franchise will be keen to shift focus back to cricket. However, the controversy has reignited discussions about the role of team owners and how publicly they should engage with players during matches.
