Chennai Super Kings delivered a dominant all-round performance to thrash Mumbai Indians by 103 runs in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 23.
After being put into bat, Chennai Super Kings posted a commanding 207/6 in their 20 overs, riding on a sensational unbeaten century from Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter anchored the innings brilliantly, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 54 balls with a perfect mix of aggression and composure.
He found good support from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who chipped in with a quick 22 off 14, while Sarfaraz Khan (14 off 8) and Dewald Brevis (21 off 11) played handy cameos to keep the scoreboard ticking. Late contributions from Jamie Overton, who struck a quick 15 off 7 balls, ensured the visitors crossed the 200-run mark comfortably.
In response, Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous start to their chase, losing early wickets and never really recovering from the initial blows.
The chase was effectively sealed during the powerplay, courtesy of a brilliant spell from Akeal Hosein, who picked up four crucial wickets and dismantled the MI batting lineup. Although Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 30) and Tilak Varma (37 off 29) tried to steady the innings, the lack of partnerships and rising required rate kept Mumbai on the back foot.
CSK bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals, with Noor Ahmad picking up two wickets, while Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton, and Gurjapneet Singh chipped in with one wicket each. Mumbai Indians were eventually bowled out for just 104 in 19 overs, falling well short of the target.
Earlier, Mumbai had their moments with the ball, with AM Ghazanfar and Ashwani Kumar picking up two wickets each, but they failed to contain Samson, whose innings proved to be the difference between the two sides.
