IPL 2026 : Mukesh Kumar’s spectacular grab sends Sherfane Rutherford packing in DC vs MI clash

The high-octane rivalry between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) reached a fever pitch during the 8th match of the IPL 2026 season on Saturday. In a crucial mid-innings clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the home side asserted their dominance early after Axar Patel won the toss and elected to field. While the contest was billed as a battle of heavyweights, it was a moment of sheer athletic brilliance from Mukesh Kumar that stole the headlines, sending the dangerous Sherfane Rutherford back to the dugout and leaving the MI middle order in tatters.
The drama unfolded in the 12th over when DC’s young spinner, Vipraj Nigam, was brought into the attack to break a burgeoning partnership. On the fifth delivery of the over (11.5), Nigam tossed up a tempting top spinner, baiting Rutherford into a big shot. The Caribbean powerhouse obliged, launching a massive slog-sweep toward the deep square leg boundary. For a moment, the Delhi crowd held its breath as the ball soared toward the ropes.
However, Mukesh, sprinting with laser focus from his position, covered significant ground to his right. He plucked the ball out of the air just inches from the boundary, showing remarkable spatial awareness to decelerate and avoid crossing the line, eventually celebrating the dismissal by hugging Kuldeep Yadav who was charging in from the other side.

Rutherford’s departure for just 5 runs off 7 balls epitomized the struggles faced by the five-time champions throughout their innings. The early collapse began in the third over when Mukesh removed Ryan Rickelton (9) and Tilak Varma (0), leaving MI reeling at 18/2. Although veteran Rohit Sharma provided some stability with a breezy 35 off 26 balls, including four boundaries and a six, he fell victim to Patel just as he looked set to accelerate.
Suryakumar Yadav, captaining the side, shouldered the burden of the recovery. “SKY” notched a gritty half-century (51 off 36 balls), peppered with five boundaries and two signature sixes, but he found little support from the other end. The disciplined Delhi bowling unit, led by Mukesh’s clinical 2/26 and Patel’s economical 1/22, ensured that MI could never truly break free.
Following the fall of Naman Dhir (28) in the penultimate over, it was left to Mitchell Santner (18*) and Corbin Bosch (11*) to drag Mumbai to a competitive total. A late flurry of runs saw MI finish their 20 overs at 162/6. While the total offers the MI bowlers something to defend, the momentum sits firmly with the Delhi Capitals.
