IPL 2026: Nitish Rana penalised after on-field confrontation, handed demerit point

Delhi Capitals (DC) cricketer Nitish Rana has been penalised following a confrontation with a match official during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The IPL governing council has fined Rana 25% of his match fee and handed him one demerit point for the incident.
The controversy unfolded in the 19th over of Delhi’s run chase when his teammate Tristan Stubbs was denied permission to change his gloves. The fourth umpire reportedly refused the request, citing pace-of-play regulations, which led to visible frustration within the DC camp.
Rana, who was on the bench at the time, reacted strongly and was seen engaging in a prolonged and animated argument with the official near the boundary line. According to an official IPL statement, he was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to the use of an audible obscenity during a match.
Tensions escalated further when Stubbs was dismissed on the very next delivery after the request was denied. The South African batter reacted angrily, throwing his helmet and bat while walking back to the pavilion.
The offence has been classified as a Level 1 breach, for which the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.
"Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee's sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," the official release stated as quoted by NDTV Sports.
Stubbs anger erupts after glove denial, DC slam umpires
The disciplinary controversy somewhat overshadowed a clinical performance by CSK, who secured their first win of the IPL 2026 season. Sanju Samson was the standout performer, smashing an unbeaten 115 off 56 balls to power CSK to a commanding 212/2.
In response, DC fought hard, with Tristan Stubbs scoring a gritty 60, but they struggled against the pace and precision of Jamie Overton, who delivered a match-winning spell of 4/18. DC eventually finished on 189, falling short by 23 runs. The defeat marked their second consecutive loss, leaving them with two wins from four matches in the tournament.
