The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur turned into a cauldron of intensity on Sunday, as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) took on the Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-stakes 54th match of the IPL 2026 season. With the playoff race heating up, RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to field, a decision that paid immediate dividends as the Bengaluru bowlers exploited the early evening conditions. While Mumbai faced an early collapse, the game’s narrative was defined by a stunning middle-overs breakthrough that shifted the momentum firmly back toward the Bengaluru side.
The highlight of the first innings arrived in the 13th over, courtesy of a moment of pure bowling brilliance from Rasikh Salam. Mumbai Indians, having recovered from a disastrous start of 28/3, were finally finding their rhythm. Naman Dhir was the aggressor, looking set for a big one after smashing two boundaries earlier in the over to bring the Raipur crowd to its feet.
However, Salam had the final laugh with a delivery that will likely feature in the season’s montages. On the third ball of the 13th over (12.3 ov), Salam produced a cross-seam length ball just outside off. The ball stayed uncharacteristically low and skidded through the surface with lethal pace. Dhir, attempting a risky horizontal-bat swipe across the line, was completely deceived by the lack of bounce. The ball darted under his bat and crashed into the leg stump, sending the woodwork cartwheeling.
Dhir departed for a well-made 47 off 32 balls (including 5 fours and 2 sixes), ending a crucial 82-run partnership with Tilak Varma. The breakthrough was timed perfectly for RCB, as MI was poised to launch a late-overs assault. Salam finished his spell as a game-changer, proving that pace and variation remain the ultimate weapons in the T20 format.

Despite the loss of Dhir, the Mumbai Indians managed to claw their way to a competitive total of 166/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was a rollercoaster of emotions for the MI faithful. The Powerplay was dominated by RCB’s veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar, who dismantled the top order by removing Ryan Rickelton (4), Rohit Sharma (22), and the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck in a single devastating opening spell.
The rescue act was led by Tilak, who played the anchor role to perfection. Tilak notched up a resilient half-century, scoring 57 off 42 deliveries. His ability to rotate the strike during the middle overs and find the boundary when needed kept the scoreboard ticking at a run rate of 8.30. Late cameos from Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar ensured that MI crossed the 160-mark, setting a target that would require discipline from the RCB batters.
On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/23. As the innings break concluded, the win probability is in favor of RCB, but with Mumbai’s bowling lineup boasting the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, the chase in Raipur promises to be a thrilling affair.
