Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Ravichandran Ashwin provided a detailed strategic outlook on the potential trade that would see Sanju Samson move from RR to CSK. Speaking on his show ‘Ash ki Baat,’ Ashwin addressed the hot-button issue of Samson’s captaincy chances and highlighted how the wicketkeeper-batter would necessitate a complete reshaping of the CSK top order.

Ashwin was clear that Samson, despite his leadership experience with the Royals, is unlikely to be handed the captaincy in his first season at the five-time champions. He believes the franchise will stick with the incumbent, Ruturaj Gaikwad, for now, reserving Samson as a long-term succession plan.

“I don’t think Sanju will get captaincy at CSK because it would be his first year and I am not sure they will give him captaincy right away. But he will definitely be an option to lead in the future if the trade happens.” Ashwin said.

This suggests that while CSK views Samson as the heir apparent to the role, likely post-MS Dhoni‘s final exit, they might prefer a smoother transition that allows the new player to settle into the team environment first, rather than immediately burdening him with leadership.

Ashwin noted that Samson’s arrival would be a massive strategic benefit for CSK, as it plugs a critical hole in their batting line-up. The trade would allow CSK to deploy a completely new and exciting Indian top three, moving Gaikwad out of his customary opening spot to accommodate Samson. Ashwin outlined the proposed new structure:

“CSK also benefit by plugging that gap in the top order. Ayush and Sanju can open, Ruturaj can come at three, which is what he has been wanting to do. That gives them balance.” Ashwin concluded.

This shift will provide the team with a dynamic opening pair of Ayush Mhatre and Samson, followed by Gaikwad at No. 3, which is a position Gaikwad has reportedly expressed a desire to bat at since he mostly batted at the same position in the 2025 edition.
