IPL 2026: ‘That awareness is rare at this age' - Anil Kumble in awe of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Former legendary spinner Anil Kumble has heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi ahead of the high-pressure Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2026.
The 15-year-old batter has emerged as one of the biggest talking points of the season with his fearless batting and remarkable composure at such a young age. Despite failing to make an impact in Rajasthan’s previous game against Mumbai Indians (MI), former India head coach Kumble believes the youngster will continue to back his natural style in the knockout fixture.
Speaking ahead of RR’s game against SRH, Kumble highlighted how Suryavanshi has already shown the temperament to handle pressure situations during the league stage itself.
“Vaibhav Suryavanshi will be eager to prove himself in the eliminator. He managed only four runs against MI in the last game, so this is a fresh opportunity. I don't think he sees this as a high-pressure knockout game. He should just go out and play his natural game. He is remarkably mature for a 15-year-old. We saw that in his 90-plus knock against LSG, where he helped Rajasthan win a must-win match. Rajasthan had to win their last two games to qualify, so that innings was under serious pressure as well. Yet, he played with the same freedom,” Kumble said on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’.
Suryavanshi has impressed fans and experts alike with his fearless intent at the top of the order, often taking on experienced bowlers without hesitation. Kumble pointed out that the youngster’s ability to remain calm and adaptable is what separates him from many players of his age.
The former India skipper further explained that Suryavanshi’s approach is unlikely to change even in a knockout encounter, as the teenager understands the balance between aggression and responsibility.
“I don't think he will change his approach just because it's an eliminator. If the ball is in his slot, he will go for it. But if the situation demands, he also knows when to take his time and build an innings. That awareness is rare at his age. Whether it's a league game or a knockout, his mindset remains the same. That is what makes him so special,” he concluded.
RR coach defends Sooryavanshi’s use as Impact player
With Rajasthan Royals set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in a crucial Eliminator, all eyes will once again be on the young prodigy. The winner between them will be facing Gujarat Titans in the qualifier 2 on May 29.
