IPL 2026: ‘That’s the approach you need’ - Mitchell McClenaghan on GT’s clinical chase against RCB

The Gujarat Titans (GT) produced a composed all-round performance to defeat the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Match 42 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following the victory, experts lauded GT’s calculated run-chase and the influence of their all-rounders.
Chasing a modest target of 156, GT got off to a strong start, with the top order executing their plans to perfection. Speaking after the match, former New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan highlighted the importance of intent shown by the batters early in the innings.
“That’s the approach you need when chasing a smaller total. As Jos Buttler mentioned, Shubman Gill spoke to the top order about putting pressure on bowlers like Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. It was exceptional leadership to go out and execute that plan. They got off to a strong start, and that’s where the game was won. Despite a brief middle-order collapse, most of the damage had already been done,” he said on Star Sports.
GT’s aggressive approach at the top ensured that the required rate never became a concern, even though there were a few hiccups in the middle overs. The early momentum allowed the home side to stay firmly in control of the chase.
Meanwhile, former India player Sanjay Bangar heaped praise on Jason Holder for his all-round contribution and tactical awareness, which played a key role in GT’s win.
“An all-rounder like him, especially an overseas fast bowler, adds immense value to the balance of the side. His understanding of the game is reflected in the control he has over his lines and lengths. You saw that when a batter tried to lap him, he adjusted instantly. He’s a very smart cricketer, and having led teams before, he knows how to finish games as well. Overall, he’s a great addition to the GT side,” said Bangar on the same show.
Holder’s disciplined bowling and ability to read the game added depth to GT’s lineup, further strengthening their position in the tournament. He was also named Player of the Match for his brilliant outing.
