IPL 2026: ‘There are a lot of areas that we can do better’ - Riyan Parag reflects on RR’s brave tactical calls after playoff qualification

Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag expressed satisfaction after his side’s 30-run victory over Mumbai Indians and qualification for the IPL 2026 playoffs, but admitted that the team still has areas to improve. Batting first, Rajasthan Royals posted a strong total of 205/8 in their 20 overs through a collective batting performance, with contributions coming from several players. Their bowlers then delivered a disciplined display to restrict Mumbai Indians to 175, sealing an important win in the final league-stage match.
Parag said the team was pleased with the result but remained focused on improving ahead of the playoffs. He also explained that the decision to promote Jofra Archer up the batting order was a tactical move aimed at increasing the scoring rate on a pitch that demanded aggressive intent rather than cautious batting.
“Obviously it's good when things go to plan. I know we've won the game, we've qualified, but a lot of areas that we can do better. Wanted the set batter to play a little longer. We needed runs. It's a wicket where you can't have two players batting in the middle and going at a run a ball. Wanted one guy to take the initiative, take the risk. And the other guy could stay a little bit longer. Have taken a lot of brave calls actually this season. That's how I like to lead,” said Parag after the match as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Parag said the dismissal of Hardik Pandya by Archer proved to be a crucial moment in the match. Parag explained that Hardik was building an important partnership with Suryakumar Yadav as Mumbai Indians attempted to stage a comeback during the run chase. With the win, Rajasthan Royals moved to 16 points and qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs. They will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator on May 27 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
"I thought, Hardik - there's only one guy who can get him out and that is Jofra. It's tough but all the credit to them. I don't usually praise them a lot so they don't gloat. I'm definitely not fit. All of this was mental toughness. Jofra's fine, he's strong as a rock. Jaddu bhai has some niggles here and there. We should've qualified way earlier. Left it a little too late. Hopefully we learn from all of our games," said Parag.
