In a moment that blended emotion with gratitude, Virat Kohli delivered a touching tribute to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long-serving head physio Evan Speechly, marking the end of an era during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Speechly, who had been an integral part of the franchise since its inception in 2008, officially concluded his 18-year association with the team in 2025.
The franchise organised a special farewell event in Bengaluru, inviting players, coaching staff, and support members to celebrate Speechly’s immense contribution behind the scenes. While RCB has witnessed several changes in personnel over the years, Speechly remained one constant figure—quietly ensuring player fitness and recovery throughout the highs and lows of the team’s IPL journey.
Kohli, who has spent the majority of his IPL career with RCB, spoke from the heart in a video shared by the franchise. Reflecting on their long association, he highlighted not just Speechly’s professionalism, but his human qualities that made him deeply respected within the dressing room.
Kohli’s tribute stood out for its sincerity and warmth. The former RCB skipper acknowledged that Speechly was more than just a physio—he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of emotional support for players over the years.
“I’ve probably spent the most time with you in the RCB setup. You’re one of the OGs. Apart from your hard work and professionalism, your kindness, care, and integrity are what truly stand out. That’s something I’ll always carry with me,” said Kohli.
His words resonated deeply with fans and the cricketing fraternity, offering a rare glimpse into the unseen contributions of support staff in a high-pressure league like the IPL. Kohli also reinforced the idea that Speechly will always remain part of the RCB family—a sentiment echoed by several teammates and staff members present at the farewell.
𝙀𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙧𝙖, 𝙀𝙫𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙮! Your legacy at RCB will always be remembered. 🙌❤️

While emotions ran high off the field, RCB’s performance on it has been equally noteworthy this season. The defending champions have enjoyed a strong run so far, securing six wins from nine matches and currently sitting second on the points table.
Their impressive net run rate reflects a well-rounded campaign, with both bat and ball contributing consistently. Despite a recent four-wicket loss to the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the team remains firmly in contention for a playoff berth.
The squad is currently on a short break and will next face the Lucknow Super Giants on May 7 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. With momentum largely on their side, RCB will be keen to bounce back strongly in the upcoming fixture.

A major driving force behind RCB’s success this season has been Kohli’s exceptional form with the bat. The veteran has amassed 379 runs in nine matches at an impressive average of 54.14, placing him among the top run-scorers of the tournament.
Observers have pointed out a noticeable evolution in Kohli’s batting approach this season. Following his decision to step away from Test cricket, he appears to have embraced a more aggressive and dynamic style in T20s. His increased bat speed and intent have allowed him to access a wider range of scoring areas, making him a more dangerous proposition for bowlers.
