IRE vs NZ 2026: Paul Stirling ruled out of one-off Test match against the Black Caps after briefly featuring in Emerald Challenge

Experienced Ireland batter Paul Stirling has been ruled out of their one-off Test match against New Zealand after sustaining a calf injury. The game is scheduled to take place in Belfast and will be played across four days, starting from May 27.

Stirling formed part of the Northern Strikers’ squad for the 2026 Emerald Challenge, a domestic red-ball game ahead of their Test match against New Zealand. In the game, the 35-year-old briefly came on the field but was not deemed fit enough to bat.

"Paul had a scan yesterday. He has a grade two strain and his return to playing will be determined. He obviously got injured at the World Cup, he's been on a return to play plan and it hasn't necessarily worked out 100% for him with a couple of niggles that's been lingering in and around that knee injury, which was obviously quite severe. Hopefully this one [with his calf] can be rehabbed properly. But it could be a four to five week job to ensure that he's fully fit and ready to go for the rest of the summer, Ireland coach Henrich Malan said, via BBC Sport.

Stirling picked up a knee injury against Australia during the Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year and has not played professional cricket since. The right-handed batter also stepped down as Ireland’s T20I captain following their disappointing showing in the aforementioned competition. However, he will continue to lead the side out in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Stirling will be a huge miss for the Irish side as they take on former World Test Championship winners, New Zealand, for the first time in their Test history. The top-order batter has scored 521 runs in 10 matches in the longest format of the game, his nation’s fourth-highest run-getter.

Ireland squad for one-off Test against New Zealand announced

Andrew Balbirnie, meanwhile, will captain Ireland against New Zealand. Out of the 12 Test matches that he has played in, the right-handed batter has led in nine of those games.
