Cheteshwar Pujara shared his feelings while watching the start of the Ranji Trophy from the sidelines after announcing his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket earlier this year. On August 24, the right-handed batter took to social media to announce his decision to step away from the beautiful game.
During his illustrious career, Pujara was a prolific performer in red-ball cricket, especially in the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class cricket tournament in India. He has the joint-most double hundreds in the Ranji Trophy, having registered the feat on nine occasions.
As the 91st season of the Ranji Trophy got underway on Wednesday, October 15, the 37-year-old admitted that it feels odd for him to not be a part of it. However, he decided to take a trip down memory lane, thinking about the fond memories, playing for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy since his debut in 2005. The Rajkot-born also wished the players competing in the 2025-26 season the very best.
With the Ranji Trophy season underway today, it feels odd to not be playing for the first time since making my Ranji debut in 2005. But gives me the time to reflect on the importance of the competition to Indian cricket, and reminisce some fond memories of playing with my state teammates over the years," the 37-year-old wrote on his official Instagram account
"To all the players starting their campaign today—wishing everyone the very best for the 2025-26 season. Cherish the opportunity as it’s a competition like no other!" Pujara added.
